25 year old Abhinav Bindra is a businessman from northen city of Chandigarh, India.Athens Games champion Zhu Qinan of China won silver medal and Henri Hakkinen of Finland won the bronze.
'I am happy, it is the best feeling in my life,' said Bindra.'I was trying to concentrate on shooting. I wasn't thinking about making history. I mean I was two points behind at one stage.
'For me life will go on, (but) I sincerely hope that this will change the face of Olympic sport in India. In India, Olympic sport is not really a priority, so I hope that Olympic sports in general can get more attention.'
Bindra scored total of 700.5.He scored 10.8 in the finals.In the 10 rounds, he shot 10.7, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.5, 10.5, 10.6, 10.0, 10.2 and 10.8 to win the gold.He started the final in third position and improved his performance to win the gold.
He is the first gold medalist of India in Beijing 2008.Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil have congratulated him.This is the historic moments for india because non of the Indian had won an individual Olympic title before.India had won only eight hockey gold medals before.
Bindra's mother said,"We are very proud of our son. He has done a great thing for the country. We will be rushing to Delhi to receive him when he returns on Thursday."
AS Bindra,his father said,"He paid a lot of attention towards physical training despite his back injury. He did tough commando training in Germany for three weeks prior to the Olympics".
"This is an individual medal. It's a greater achievement. I was the captain of a team that won a gold but this is far bigger," said Vasudevan Bhaskaran, captain of the Indian hockey team which won gold at the Moscow Games in 1980.
"Abhinav has shown the world that an Indian can also stand on the podium.It is a total result of his hard work and his family support," said P.T.Usha.
BCCI has awarded him Rs 25 lakhs.Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has announced a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
